    • Johannes was on the Russian front when the German troops were ordered to retreat. When hostilities ended he made his way first to his hometown, Wismar, Mecklenburg. After several weeks he decided to join his daughter, Wilhelmine, who was living in the allied occupied zone of Germany. He traveled mostly on foot and hitchhiked and arriving at his daughter's home on Christmas eve 1946.

    The gravesite is a double grave meant for two people. Originally it was intended for his second wife Ilse to be buried there. Since Ilse died while in the US and was buried in Jasper, TX the second grave is empty. In September of 2002 his granddaughter (Karin Schneider, geb. Harms) had an inscription added to the marble headstone. The inscription gives the information about Ilse's death and burial in the US.
