    • FAYETTEVILLE — Maurice A. "Mrs. J.E." McClelland, 87, was born Oct. 31, 1920, and died Oct. 16, 2008, at Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville.

Maurice was raised in Fayetteville, graduated from Fayetteville High School and attended the University of Arkansas.

In 1940 while a student, she became the first woman to fly an airplane in Arkansas and received her wings from the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Authority. She was a member of Delta Gama Sorority and was selected as a Razorback Beauty.

In 1941, she married J.E. "Ep" McClelland.

A life-long resident of Fayetteville, Maurice will be remembered for her loving support of family and her cherished friends, especially "the girls" with whom she played many hours of bridge and her Saturday morning breakfast group.

Her many years of membership in PEO, Altrusa Club, PTA and DAR gave her great pleasure and she served in leadership positions in all of the organizations. She was presented a Community Service Award in 2008 by Washington County Women's Coalition.

Mrs. McClelland spent many years managing Red Ball Transfer and Storage Company, moving families from coast to coast and creating many friendships.

Her family is especially grateful to the caring staff at Butterfield Trail Village, such as Dr. Dan Bradford, Peter Schaeffer and long-time friend Mildred Webster.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and Raymond Ash, and her husband of 60 years. Survivors include three children, Jim McClelland and wife Pat, Raymond McClelland and wife Deanna, and Linda Rogers and husband Joe; one sister, Rhea Dunegan; eight grandchildren, Jay and Kirk McClelland, Luke and Gareth Rogers, Ann Whitbeck, Audra Gabbard, Jonathan Ely and Heather Cotter; and one great-grandchild, Sophia McClelland.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Moore's Chapel. Burial will be at National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Moore's Chapel.
